Overview

Ground Water Analysis is a systematic assessment of groundwater quality to determine its physical, chemical and microbiological characteristics and suitability for drinking, domestic, industrial, irrigation or other intended uses. Groundwater quality can vary significantly with geology, aquifer characteristics, depth and surrounding land-use activities. CGWB monitoring highlights parameters such as salinity, fluoride, arsenic, iron and nitrate as important groundwater-quality concerns in different parts of India.

Key Capabilities

  • Physical parameters: Colour, odour, turbidity, pH, electrical conductivity (EC) and TDS
  • Major ions: Calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium, chloride, sulphate, bicarbonate and carbonate
  • General chemistry: Total hardness, alkalinity, nitrate, fluoride, phosphate and silica
  • Trace metals: Iron, manganese, arsenic, lead, chromium, cadmium, nickel, copper, zinc and other relevant metals
  • Microbiological parameters: Total coliform and E. coli, where groundwater is intended for potable use
  • Contaminant-specific testing: Pesticides, hydrocarbons, uranium and other parameters based on site-specific risk
  • Special investigations: Salinity assessment, contamination screening and comparison of groundwater-quality trends
  • CGWB's recent groundwater-quality reporting includes major cations/anions, pH, EC, total hardness and trace metals such as arsenic, iron, manganese, zinc, copper and lead.

Applicable Regulatory Framework

  • BIS IS 10500:2012 – Drinking-water quality standard for potable groundwater.
  • CGWB Guidelines – Groundwater quality monitoring and assessment.
  • CGWA Guidelines – Groundwater abstraction, NOC and monitoring requirements.
  • ISO/IEC 17025:2017 – Laboratory testing and reporting requirements.
  • State/UT Regulations – Applicable groundwater quality and abstraction requirements.
